Dangerous

No matter if the person swatted is cleared and declared innocent... irreparable harm can come from it. People have been shot/injured/etc and usually the police take zero responsibility. It's infuriating. I hope she is able to move smoothly and keep her address secret moving forward. (Also seems like the police already had her information and had been warned this was a possibility if I read the article properly)

Compensation

It seems this unfortunate victim might have cause to seek compensation in court. Had Law Enforcement observed the requirements of due diligence, they would have discovered that the name provided to them was no longer in legal use and a "fishy aroma" was present. Consulting an attorney seems to be appropriate.

Unfortunately, in the US, at least, the courts continue to uphold that police are not responsible for their actions in executing a search warrant, even with wrong names, wrong addresses, and even murdering residents.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Accountability

Andrea Lena's picture

In some rare cases, the aggrieved parties have been given monetary compensation, but because of the 'qualified immunity' statutes in many jurisdictions, the municipalities, and hence the taxpayers, foot the bill, and not the offending law enforcement officers.

. . . governmental immunity is a legal defense. It is not in many cases an absolute. Governmental immunity can be set aside if the facts warrant it. This case does not seem to be one that warrants it. Also, I'm a bit squeamish about her fundraising efforts to collect money for relocation.

Swatting

Clara Sorrenti has become a target because she continues to speak out against injustice.

Frightened trolls have declared ‘open season’ on her because they can get away with it.

Witnessing the establishment turn a blind eye to minorities is nothing new.

I'm surprised SWATting isn't in Oxford's

The word as it's used here isn't some here-today-gone-next-week Generation Zero tiktok term but has been appearing in the press for years; more than 5, maybe ten. But if police in the UK don't have discrete units like our Special Weapons And Tactics teams, or they're known by some different term (Fluffy Pillow Squad, Ministry of Kill Them All and Let God Sort 'Em Out) then you wouldn't know it. But I'm really surprised the American edition of my go-to dictionary (I'm still mad at Noah Webster for the liberties he took with the mother tongue when he singlehandedly decided to change how we spell things here. I don't mind when mutations in language happen organically---that's evolution---but he engineered it; the arrogant swine!) doesn't list this word, because they have whole rooms full of people whose sole job is to find new words and evaluate if they're worth including in next year's edition. And like I say the word SWATting is not at all obscure. Strange...
