Been wrestling with my jeans lately, which keep falling down. Finally figured out what should have been more obvious.

I have Disappearing Butt Syndrome! My gluteus maximus is largely (?) atrophying. I've been excessively sedentary lately, I guess, but also, I'm getting old, I guess. I do get out for walks and a bit of cycling, but I think I need an exercise routine.

Any advice? Can someone recommend a workout routine to put back some muscle and ideally restore my butt to its former size, but at least stop the disappearing act?

weight loss and ratios.

For me the pants problem has more to do with my waist getting thicker than my butt getting smaller.

Recent weight loss advice I've gotten says that it's more about cutting calories than it is about burning them. If you are already fit then targeted exercises can help. But for most of us weight weight loss will come off where it damn well wants to. The waist training crowd will tell you that corsets and nippers can help teach your body what you want it to do but doctors advice against it.

I can't seem to keep an exercise routine going and I hate feeling peckish. Especially when there is a bag of chips within easy reach. So I guess my solution is going to be more elastic or maybe going for the muumuu.

Does My Butt Look Too Small In This?

I don't think that's a question females often ask.

Most nutritionists say that diet is 90% of weight loss or gain and exercise is only 10%, so I recommend you triple your daily chocolate intake and forget about the exercise!

Not weight loss, muscle loss

It may not sound obvious but this is more likely to be loss of muscle tone. Thus, advice to eat more/exercise less might not get you what you want.

The Gluteus Maximus in women is there because of the shape of the pelvis. The fact that it is prominent is due to the way that the muscles are attached to the bones at the same point that they are in men but the shape of the bone moves them upward and outward. Men are drawn to them because it means that the woman has a wide pelvis and thus makes it easier to bear children.

There is natural loss of muscle tone with age. I have a wide pelvis and have noticed in recent years that whenever I sit down I can feel my bones touch the seat through what is left of the muscle. As we age it gets harder to keep that muscle tone.

Cycling is good, but you have to be careful how you manage it. Selecting larger gears will help develop your butt but will also develop larger quads and larger calf muscles. If you want to just concentrate on butt muscles then you'll need to either go to a gym or get yourself the appropriate equipment which just concentrates on those muscles.

Sorry, there is no easier answer, unless you just want to get butt pads.

... hence the billion(?) dollar weight loss industry/ies ...

What I hope you want, is healthy weight gain. Exercise will help (as others have noted). And the exercise should increase your appetite ...

Exercise has a positive influence on general health, and on longevity.

Avoid the quick gain that fats and oils will give you. Other than the few fats we need, they are generally not good for us.

Likewise, do not seek out any extra protein - just about everybody who is not in clinical starvation, or on some whack-a-doodle diet, will get enough protein without trying. Extra is not so good for us.

Do not be afraid of >complex< carbohydrates. The 'carbs bad' nonsense has been misguiding people for 40+ years...

Vitamin B12 is for everybody. Please make sure you are getting enough.

Far easier (and probably not what you are after) is smaller/differently proportioned pants. Going to a stretch(ier) material might also help with comfort, and perhaps give a (modest) shaping/emphasis.
