Heck, just a good quality

Heck, just a good quality buckling spring Model M keyboard will put you back $104.

Those are built in the old IBM style (including the molds, etc). Beat someone to death with the keyboard, and go right back to typing. The original "mechanical" PC keyboard. I prefer buckling spring keys myself.

They are the self defence

They are the self defence tools for system administrators (especially the BOFH (bastard operators from hell) among us). >:->

Read

Can you read the keyboard though?

hugs :)

But you do not need to read

But you do not need to read the keyboard ;-)

(once upon a time, I used sandpaper on keyboard keys, to discourage computer use by un-initiated :-) )

I used a French keyboard.

I used a French keyboard. I just left the layout US English. Kept people from trying to use it, because most people aren't touch typists. "What's this weird C with a squiggle?"

One language tžo layouts

Iqm used to žriting Lithuanian žith a layout that I encountered on many diššerent keyboardsf Then I got a než computer and loaded a Lithuanian keybord žhere all the letters appear but in completely diššerent placesf

Even better is that I am

Even better is that I am familiar with French, and I've had to work on a number of Quebec systems remotely. I could have used the French layout and keyboard - I just didn't bother. It was more fun the other way.

When DOS was king

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

Back when DOS was the dominate OS I was one of the few people I knew who actually knew their way around DOS. I liked to brag that I could make DOS sit up and do tricks. So for a time I moonlighted as a computer consultant. One of my friends called one day with a problem he was having at work and I tried to talk him through how to do something in DOS and apparently used some terminology he didn't understand and rather than admit that, he managed to delete all the files on a particular drive in the company computer.

I told him to turn off the machine and not let anyone use it until I got there. I grabbed what I called my "bag of tricks" (a pair of floppy disks with all kinds of tools to delve deeply into the software structure of computers. One for ATs and one for ITs) and headed over there.

I sat down at the computer and inserted the correct floppy and booted the computer from it. I then called up the track 0 readout of delete files. As my fingers danced over the keyboard (I'm a touch typist because I took typing in HS) he said "Oh wow." As asked what the oh wow was for and he said he didn't know any one who could actually type. He was in a office where there were a half dozen computer users and none of them could type.

I can't imagine what it's like to hunt and peck while making a lot of entries. Well maybe I can. And that would explain why I shy away from using my phone as a computer. I've never master the two thumb phone texting technique I've seen the younger generation use, so it hunt and peck there.

Hugs
Patricia

They're not cheap, because

They're not cheap, because they aren't subsidized by the phone providers, but there are two or three QUERTY slide phones out there. Basically pocket computers - at least one of them, you can install your own programs.

you can read your keyboard?

Most the letters have worn off on my keyboard at work, of course I have 6 brand new ones laying in the overhead storage of my desk as every time they buy me a new tower it comes with a new keyboard and mouse, but why bother changing it out when it still works just fine?

Keyboard on my PC at home only has lettering because i had to replace it a couple of years ago. Oh and both work and home keyboard are inexpensive Logitech K120's that can be bought for less than 20 bucks.

WOW!

I got more comments on an Elvin keyboard than my stories?

Got to write fan fics about KEYBOARDS then!

However, nobody (until now)

However, nobody (until now) mentioned that they _also_ had a Dwarven keyboard. Frankly, it makes more sense, considering you tend to hammer at the keys.
