There's a new feature here at BC, at the end of all stories entered as Fiction or Wysiwyg that are rated General or Mature, there are a row of buttons for passing a link to that story on to various social media sites. It's been there since Monday. :)

I don't know if anyone has used it yet but no one has commented on it, so I thought I ought to blog about it to draw some attention.

Tell me what you think.

If you want to post a story Without the Social Media Buttons, rate it Restricted or higher or use the Story input type instead of Fiction.

Hugs,
Erin

Buttons

I hadn't said anything as I assumed an admin would come along and explain!

I'm not comfortable with the buttons, it would seem to allow anyone to easily post a link that is searchable using your favourite search engine. I regularly test if my stories can be found via Google. My personal circs mean that I'm happy posting my stuff in this environment but not if any visitor can link it.

Do I really have to go through 49 eps of Eve etc and re-class them?

No, I can do something else

I can change it so it is opt-in instead of opt-out. But, all stories that are posted on BC are searchable by Google and other search engines already. That really can't be that important of a reason to object. If I want BC findable by google and other search engines, (and about 11% of daily traffic comes from search engines) then the stories are findable, too.

Erin

I don't mind it but

It adds a text links to the end of "Printer Friendly View" and can add a page to printing out a story. Minor annoyance.

It would add a page about one time in 30

I can't see how important that would be. I can change how it lists it so that it might add only one time in 60, however.

But that objection could apply to all kinds of things that are included on the page.

I said it was minor

I wouldn't have mentioned it if you hadn't started this blog :) I often do a print-preview anyways to avoid printing anything after the end of the story...

Thanks Angharad

Ah, the Daily Telecrap. And to think that it used to be a newspaper.

Susie

Well ...

... it's better than the Daily Wail or the Currant Bun, isn't it? And definitely preferable to any other Murdoch sheet (or did I misspell that?)

OMG - Syphilis is a computer virus!!

Does this mean I have to wear a condom when I log into my facebook account? Will Symantec cure a case of syphilis? If my "hard drive" gets into an infected "software" package, do I need to tell my community health nurse?

POO-OO-OO-OOP the possible jokes on this theme are ENDLESS.

I'm not sure about it

I know that I don't know about such things, but I read that I can put a link to someone else's story on one of these sites. That to me is not on. I wouldn't dream of linking anyone else's story; as far as I'm concerned, it's there for personal perusal on BCTS only - unless someone knows different.

I wouldn't like any of my stories to be linked to Facebook etc with or without my permission, as I don't know what it means to do so. I'm not keen on my stories being spread around the world to millions of unknown people. Administrators control access rights to BCTS and that,IMHO, is the way it should be.

As anyone can read them here

and copy them without your knowledge, how can you prevent them? Mind you if millions were reading them (I wish), it would be courteous if they told me.

Just a link...

The "Social Bookmarks" (as those features are inevitably called on other sites) just links to the story on BCTS. It doesn't actually copy any of the content.

As Erin has said, this site is (theoretically) searchable on Google [1], and any Tom, Dick or Harriet can come along and read the stories at their leisure. Anyone can even comment on the stories here without necessarily needing an account. Besides which, each story has a unique URL, so there's nothing stopping people manually linking to your stories.

[1] Although they evidently don't update their index of this site very often, as only 233 pages are indexed [site:www.bigclosetr.us] (Bing's worse at only 72)! [ "Susan Heywood" site:www.bigclosetr.us ] returns one non-existent page. Repeating the search with Angharad, Erin, Angela Rasch or Stanman reveals their author pages, while me, PS, Andrea and Saless are unknown.

Meanwhile, I've just experimented with [site:www.stardustr.us] - 10,700 results (and they last indexed it earlier this month). So if you want to keep a niche readership, don't crosspost there :)
