It does make a strange sort of sense... I never lashed out at transgender or homosexual people, but I was certainly uncomfortable around them when trying to be "straight", and I could see how some people who had a rougher time of their battle against themselves could lash out.

There's also the old phrase "methinks he protesteth too much".
