I love BC.

I enjoy many of the stories here and the commentary.

There is little here that is bad other than the occasional mini-flame war. Fortunately we for the most part don't descend to that here . And Erin and her elves are vigilant the few times we don't mind our manners.

But there is a menace, an insidious evil lurking here.

OLD DOS control characters in titles!

In DOS, AKA Disc Operating System or is was it Disk Operating System? certain characters had special functions assigned to them and thus they could NOT be used in file names.

These included but are not limited to the *search characters*

*

and

?

Then there were other control characters such as

and so on.

Got hint as to the EVIL I speak of?

So for example you like a story enough to read it later or remember the old days of dial-up and prefer to read offline? Then you get a story title with a colon in it or a question mark on the end.

STOP DOING THAT!

I am getting very irritated

and , well, I'll hold my breath until I turn blue to force you to cut it out!

Breath control...

I hope you have the breath control of a Vampire because I suspect you might be holding it for quite some time? Question mark is deliberate...

Oh POOH !

So holding my breath is not a good tactic?

ZAAAAAP !

John in Wauwatosa

Well.?!?

If you don't have the breath control of a Vampire, who here is going to see your blue face???

I must be a bit more stressed

I must be a bit more stressed than normal. I was skimming, and read the subject line as "I do have a built-in chupacabra"

More than a little confusing.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Hey John!

Does this rank as high as spelling? Like in a "story tile"? (snicker)

Lazy saving

Whatever mechanism you're using to save a story to your disk, it likely gives you the option of renaming it.

Um... Do you mean like: This?

I can't see what your problem is? :-)... Of course, had you read my stuff, you'd have seen the colons... LOL.

But, seriously (if you can go there)... What problem do you have with &bell;(&bell;) and the like? I mean, what's wrong with really short titles?

Annette

The biggest problem is that

The biggest problem is that those are _control characters_. My operating system, for example, throws hissy fits if it sees a bang (!) a splat (*), or question mark (?) in the middle of file names. (Okay - ANY UNIX has an issue with it). Even windows gets a bit pissy sometimes. Heck, it's a PITA with the wonderful directories that Windows creates with {} brackets.

If it helps, web servers in general have some similarities. 1) They're case sensitive. 2) spaces are actually harder to deal with than you think. 3) anything not alphanumeric requires control codes to display properly. It's just that %2F gets translated by your browser into \ (most of the time).

Ummm. Yeah..

Yeah.... I know. I was attempting to be funny... Guess I should attempt to keep my day job.

Annette

Yup: that's it! You ?etcha.*

I KNOW it's very minor bother to change a file name but sometimes those control characters just make me want to SCREAM!

Go right ahead...

Go right ahead and scream. It'll make you feel better, and most of us won't be bothered...

Annette

I don't generally use most. myself...

But If I Wanna Use Em I Will!

I especially reserve the right to use the colon and the pipe. They make such excellent title characters...
