Just For The Record

Before the crowing starts I just wanted to remind a few of our cycling fanatics that Gary Wiggins, father of a certain winner (I hope) of the Tour de France, is an AUSTRALIAN,

Love'n'kisses,

I think the operative word is

'was' as his father died some while ago. He's a cosmopolitan character, born in Ghent, to a British mother and Aussie father, no one is denying that his dad had a small part in it. That he wanted to be a soccer player maybe isn't widely known, and it was his mum who encouraged him to race his bike. Irrespective of any of that, anyone who wins the TdF is special, as it's one of the most difficult accomplishments in the sporting world.

Shane Sutton, his coach with BC/Sky suggested that Wiggo has never tried hard at anything, and that if he had, we'd have world records that would stand for years. Perhaps in meeting this challenge, Wiggins has finally grown up and fulfilled that potential.

That he's been helped by the absence of Contador or the actual course this year, a strong team etcetera etcetera shouldn't take away the physical and mental strength/endurance it takes to win the race. So congratulations to Bradley Wiggins who looks to have it all sewn up this year.

(We all know about the Aussie skeletons in his cupboard, curious none of them mentioned it while Cadel Evans was in contention or Orica Green Edge looked as if they might win a stage.)

TDF

Wiggo looks like prooving at least 2 generalisations. The TDF is won by the team that has the least problems, and it's won in the high mountains.

Why the hell BMC chose a team designed around the flat stage?

Just to add...

In late from work last night I watched Cav's stage win, as described in EAFOAB. Ye gods....that overhead view was incredible.

Shouldn't the world map be like this?

That Map is Deficient

Antarctica is missing from that map. I did notice that MOST IMPORTANTLY, it does show Winnipeg in, more or less, the correct location, so other than its deficiency I could live with it.

Winner

Barring something silly, Bradley Wiggins has it. And what a talent in his number 2: would it be too much to hope for Froome in yellow next year with Cav in green?

Here's my choice for green...

But Seriously

Genuine congratulations to Bradley Wiggins, who it seems is not only a great rider, but a genuinely nice bloke (must be that tiny bit of Aussie in him....Eh, Angharad?) His victory is assured, barring some catastrophe, which nobody would wish on him. It was fairly obvious some days ago that Cadel Evans (an Aussie?....with a name like that?) wasn't going to win

I was glad to see that the reports describe him as a BRITISH rider. Usually, it's "ENGLISHMAN wins" or "WELSHMAN/SCOTSMAN/IRISHMAN loses".

Also, good luck at the Olympics. I mean that. I've been watching the British Open (golf) and it's just as well you can play the game in the rain,

Rain?

We've got a heatwave scheduled for here next week, perhaps only warm by Ozzie standards, but 28C is 'bloody warm' by comparison to the rest of this summer, so far.

I've heard commentators call him English, but he's been supported by a group of talented and dedicated riders including a couple of Aussies and of course the Manx Missile, so the team effort has won the race which no individual could win by himself.

Arguably, Robert Millar might have been able to win it, but he was never supported by his French teams - and I thought the Scots and the French had a special relationship. Obviously not when it comes to cycling - though the word is they approve of le Wiggo, as long as he doesn't have any Texan blood in him.

P.S. Although the bottoms of the bunkers were waterlogged

And he has it!

First and second overall, and a record-breaking stage win by Cav.
