Hockey in Canada might be facing a pivotal moment

So the news is saying 4 current and one former NHL player have been charged in relation to an alleged sexual assault that happened 2018.

What makes this interesting is that Hockey Canada, who was responsible for the players at the time seemed more interested in making the problem go away, giving the accuser a lot of money in a lawsuit settlement.

This turned out to not be a great idea, as Hockey Canada gets most of its money from parents paying fees so their kids can play on Hockey Canada sponsored teams, and they were less than impressed with what appears to be hush money.

Once this came out, a lot of pressure was applied to the local police department, who had earlier dismissed the idea that anything illegal had happened, forcing a reopening of the investigation, which now has led to these charges.

This could be a pivotal moment for hockey, because just getting charges laid seemed almost impossible with the level of near-worship given to hockey players, especially those good enough to play for Canada at world events or make it to the NHL.

We'll have to see what the end result is, its possible they will be found not guilty and that being an accurate assessment of the situation, but if they are found guilty it may be a sign that just because someone has been put on a pedestal, it doesn't mean they should be above the law.

As for me, I'm torn between wanting to keep an eye on this case hoping for some justice, or needing to step away from the news because it might trigger my PTSD

Ah, well.

Apropos of Nothing

The title led me to wonder if too many hockey games were breaking out at fights.

Seriously now, you probably don't want anything to trigger PTSD.

Happening in Australia, where prominent sports stars thought they could get away with anything and now it's catching up with them, not ice hockey of course.

Canadian Problems As Bad as in The US?

I am wondering if life would be any better in Canada than here? I had a dream last night that I had fled to Canada to avoid US Military Service during Vietnam. Lots of Americans did just that. I'm not a traitor but there was no good reason for Americans to die in that war. Over 50 years later we know that now.

I am sorry that young Hockey players are not safe from predators. I just don't know if the problem is wide spread in sports in America.

Coupla thoughts ...

First, I find my day-to-day life goes better if I generally avoid <insert tragically long list of 'icky' things.>

I think in terms of my local radio station having 'safe' (when they do music) and 'unsafe' (when they do newscasts) times. I even have a little alarm thingy set to warn me.

Steven Covey https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_7_Habits_of_Highly_Effecti... 'sliced up the world' this way. I think he calls it 'circles of concern':

= Things that I both care about and can control. Example: how much sugar I put in my coffee {as I was typing my alarm thing alerted me 'radio newscast in 2-minutes' Oh.}

= Things I care about but cannot control: Example: Local weather that I have to go out in.

= Things where I both don't care and can't control. Example: the color of a stranger's underwear.

Dorothy, for you and a lot of others, the Hockey Scandal is in the "care but can't control category". We >might< affect it by campaigning, petitioning, 'going out on the street', letter writing, gathering attention via social media, etc.

I'm not enough of a psychologist or a sociologist or a 'whatever' to have a good 'handle' on this:

It seems anytime there is a power imbalance, there is the possibility of abuse/exploitation, or the reverse, favoritism. Examples abound: priest/parishioner, teacher/student, human sexual dimorphism, employer/employee, doctor/patient, humans/animals, predator/prey or herbivores/plants (these last two are how biology & ecosystems 'work'.)

I know the USA Federal Government goes to extensive lengths to reduce, and to train employees 'away from' abuses.

Unfortunately

Unfortunately this is a situation amongst all sports, not only on a professional level but also collegiate and high school even. Let's not even get into celebrities. The only ones being punished are the MOST outlandish and stupid of them at covering their tracks which forces accountability. We're not seeing any that truly know how to hide their tracks as well as inspire fear for people to come forward.

i hope all creeps get whats coming to them

in the pro wrestling world, vince mcmahon, and i'm thinking many others as well very soon, is going to be in a lot of trouble for sexual assault. in the past other pro wrestlers such an ric flair have been accused but they have lots of money power and fame. mcmahon though may be too high profile, and i think it will catch up to him at least somewhat.
honestly, people that that need to rot
