I haven't posted anything in a couple of weeks, and I just found myself writing a message to a company that specializes in dressing boys up as girls (tranniegear.com). Having re-read my own letter, and having a streak of narcissistic self-appreciation of my own wit (should I make my own big head joke, or leave it for someone else to do?), I thought it might be fun enough to share.

Dear Jesse,

I notice that you don't have sizes listed for any of your wigs. In the Paula Young wig catalog, their sizing chart shows that I probably need their size Large. (paulayoung.com)

A couple of years ago at Ricky's, I bought a "one size fits all; don't worry, it's completely adjustable -- see the hooks?" wig. I was too bashful to try it on in the store. Well, it didn't, it wasn't, and it didn't sit right at all. I gave it away to someone with a smaller head, and it didn't work for them, either.

My other wig experience was much better, but not without strife. I bought a wig in a beauty supply store in Brooklyn. I tried the display model on in the store. It was perfect. They brought me a brand new one from the back, which they wouldn't let me try on due to their no-return policy or something. I was suspicious, but they reassured me that it was exactly the same. That was a lie. It wasn't. It was a different cap size (too small), and the cut was almost 2" shorter (pretty obvious in a shoulder-length long, straight wig). I brought it back, they cited their no-return policy again, I threw a hissy-fit and eventually, after much yelling by me, pointing and measuring and waving arms and much cursing in an oriental language by the owner, left with the display model.

So... What's the story with your wigs? What are their size range, and what size heads will they sit properly on and still look like they do in the catalog?

Thanks in advance,

Pippa

Wigging out

Good luck. I know you were referring to wigs by your subject mattter. Paul Young is a good source and very reasonable. As for me, I never could wear a wig. I just let my hair grow out and let a lesbian hairdresser shape for me as it grew.

I noticed the gaff on the site, also. I have never seen a gaff that works and I have ordered many of them before my surgery.

Love,
Billie Sue

No Gafs for me.

Gwen After buying a gaf once, I decided that they were a horrible gaffe. I always used a control set of panties.

Keep you hair on!

I would have been exactly the same. How on earth can someone expect to sell something that clearly isn't the same as what you opted for.

You go girl.

Many people are not as fortunate as I and able to grow their own hair to the desired length and style they want. For a short while I did boardwork (making wigs) and came very quickly to understand just how personal it is and just how quiet some people want to be about it.

On the subject of no returns/no refunds policy...

A while back a scam was set up to defraud people of their hard-earned.

The company involved were selling something - it doesn't matter what - and charging people for them. As it transpires the items didn't even exist and the customers had their cheques and money orders returned. The cheque was from "The Bondage and Fetish Store"

Needless to say, many didn't cash their returned cheques.

I can't see why

And here I was contemplating a cut

Not just a trim, but a bob or somesuch. I had nearly 2 feet cut off of my hair in August, and it's again to my waist/small of my back. I'm seriously thinking of quite short, at least as short in my picture that I show on here when I'm not at work.

Gwen I have had good luck and many compliments with wigs I have purchased at this store. If you like, 503-282-1664, is their number. You could call them and ask them where they get their wigs. and who would stock them where you live. I have tried both natural hair and synthetic and frankly can't tell the difference.

My head is about 21" in diameter, and I have never needed to ask for a special size. My skin is very intolerant to tapes and adhesives, so it must stay on by its self.

Gwen Brown! 21 inches in diameter translates to about 66 inches in girth. That's the size of a table! And you claim you have no difficulty getting fitted. 'Scuze me while I laugh,

Wigs and such

I can remember when I wore wigs. I was so self conscious that I'm sure I gave myself away to many who were watching. I have my hair long. Once a week I see a stylist. I had a stylist cut my hair into a bob and I freaked.
My current stylist knows not to cut my hair. she trims the frayed ends and frizz but she does not cut.
21 inched in diameter? Wow as a metal smith and pipe fitter that tells me you have a big head. Your head my have a circumfrence of 21 inches. divide 21 by pi and you'll have your diameter.
I was surfing today when I came across this blog. I chuckled and then decided to give my $.02 worth.
One thing I have never done is color my hair. It is natural blond, a color most women would dye/die for. The down size of my hair it is fine, hence coloring could destroy my hair as I already have a perm. My hair is naturally curly, however it is not tamed, thus I get a perm so I can control my hair and with a perm I can have many different styles.
Wigs today are far superior to when i was buying them to hide my military haircut. I never had a problem with bait and switch. I could try on wigs, with a skull cap first. If It fit I bought it. I have always tried on wigs before buying them. Being openly honest with the clerk and remaining cool is highly beneficial.

Follow-Up

Let's see... It's now March 12, and I wrote the message above on February 19. I've received no response!

Not everyone does customer service very well, but I must say that it's a bit off-putting.

Hey Pippa!I could swear we

Hey Pippa!I could swear we answered your question because your name is so familiar but I can across this post on a web search and figured I would answer myself here too!

Honestly I can only speak for sure about the Voltage Collection because I have actually measured the caps and found they will fit up to a 25" head. The do stretch and have adjustable treatment straps. Also because I wear these wigs myself I can tell you I have a 23.5" cork head I use for styling and they fit fine on that as well. a 21" head is not large at all so perhaps the cap you have isn't stretch? Also try wearing a cap with the ones you have trouble with and use some large bobby pins to secure it so it doesn't slip. Just a suggestion so the ones you bought aren't a waste. I like the Voltage Wigs because they are a fiber called Eloura Blend. It's a heavier fiber than kinekalon so more like natural hair and gives a fuller appearance. It's actually the fiber they used to use in the 90's until kinekalon became the standard which is much cheaper and more of a crapshoot. Kinekalon comes in 7 different grades so if you see 100% kinekalon you rally won't know if it's a low or high grade. When we found a company with Eloura I was celebrating like crazy!

Wow!

Thanks for the response, Jesse!

I guess the internets ate my message. Perhaps gmail flagged it as spam or something, but I never saw it. Very odd, as you would definitely be in my contacts list because I wrote to you first.

Thanks for the great info and the good news. I've already picked out some cosmetics I'm interested in, so now I can finish putting together my order.

Small world, isn't it? Google definitely helps that.
