Trying the .mobi format

My most popular story on here (assessed by likes) is ‘If You’re Done’. You can read it right here on BigCloset, but I thought that perhaps some folks would like it have it in a format that they can download and keep. I designed some cover art, gave the story an edit (because I’m never truly happy with anything...) and a friend converted the result into the .mobi format, which I think ought to be suitable for most people with an e-reader.

Then I hit a snag: Wordpress won’t host a .mobi for me – nor a .epub or even a .zip – so I had to host the file elsewhere. I’m not sure what the ideal long-term solution might be, but in the meantime if you’d like a downloadable version of this short story, you can currently find it here:

(Warning: the story has a suicide theme.)

I hope you’ll enjoy reading it – perhaps reading it again – in the new format.

That’s great, Samantha... and precisely why I sought help here. I’ll do my best to make those changes to my Wordpress theme.

Using open standards

As far as I know, currently pretty much only the [Amazon] Kindle uses the mobi format natively.

On the other hand, the epub format is an open standard. And seems to have become the de-facto standard pretty much every where else. Many independent publishers seem to have abandoned the mobi format in favor of the epub format.

But thank you for making your story available in some e-book form. I will be reading it in the coming days.

I had imagined that those who

I had imagined that those who wanted a copy to keep would; cmd A / cmd C / cmd V then save in a format that floats their boat.

Another option

If you intend to make it free to anyone who whats it, you could publish it on Smashwords. You simply need to format it in a Word.doc file, upload it there and they will convert it to mobi, epub and a host of other formats. You can then set the price as free and they will make available on that site, plus distribute it to a plethora of retail sites so that folks who never heard of BCTS can read it as well.

If you need help in formatting I'd be glad to do that for you.

Thanks for the tip. That sounds like a great way to get freebies out there.
