There is a new John Lewis Insurance commercial.

It shows a boy dressed as a girl dancing to Edge of 17 causing destruction around the house. Stupid advert , as I'll get a child to smash my 2 year old TV and get a new one if I know they'll pay out for wanton destruction. it's a remake of a five year old advert where a girl does the same, albeit with less destruction.

One the comments got 754 thumbs up's in 3 days.

"Male ‘expresses himself’ with zero regard for the negative impact on the females around him. The patriarchy in action. Clever work John Lewis"

TERFY comment? Surly normal people don't think like that?

It's a 10 or 11 year old child having fun! I couldn't believe normal people would thumbs up such a strange comment, There is no indication of the child being trans, Are they really that reactionary I thought.

There are few other anti-trans, and woke comments.

Then I found this and it made sense.

If you're here to watch a silly commercial and wondering why there's an unusual amount of angry comments about home damage, it's because this advert is being targeted by Anti-trans activists who are posting it on social media telling people to comment negatively to shame the brand.

It seems that even though this is a fictional child and no mention of anything trans comes up, the sight of a young boy in a dress causes enough anger for them that they need to come here and vent it.

Just clearing that up for anyone confused.

I had never heard the term TURF, until recently, now I see it everywhere online.

Daft advert

I've seen it on the box and, I'm afraid, I really don't get the point.

It makes me wince to see so much wanton or unconscious destruction and that is about all.

Actually, I think TURF is a better acronym than TERF... now all I have to do is to Bacronym it!

Typical Uneducated Raving Feminist
Tiresome Unctuous Raving Feminist

Not just Feminists

These days with the Right Wingers being given new red meat (and lead by the nose) to focus on instead of their leadership's failures and lies we have the new category of Typical Uncuous Raving Dumbasses.

Ads like this

Ads like this are the main reason that I do not have network TV. The ads are stupid, the programing is inane, and likely causes brain damage. When I last watched there was a few minutes of programming between ads. Then the cost of Cable got so expensive that I could not afford it.

The whole of my history as a woman has been in stealth, having done my very best to be indistinguishable from a genetic woman. The skit shown lacks meaning.

Hi Gwen , My take on what

leeanna19's picture

Hi Gwen , My take on what could be defined as a woman..

A woman sitting in a restaurant see's an couple on another table. They both get up at the same time to use the toilet. Both go and stand in front of the mirror tidying up. She see the other woman drops her lipstick, picks it up for her chats. The woman notices the woman has a deep voice . So what she's met plenty of women the same.

Both women sit back down for their deserts. She is totally unaware that the woman in the bathroom with her was trans.

If you asked anyone "who's is that over there" they would say "Who, that woman?"

If it looks like a duck , and quacks like a duck , we all think it's a duck.
So everyone will say, That is a woman .

I suspect the majority of trans woman live this way. (like you by the sound of it) They don't want to attract undue attention.

The problem comes when people out them , or they make a noise about it themselves.

I have no opinion about the ones that deliberately draw attention. Most of the time I present as a straight white male (not through choice, but got lots of bills). I can't possibly know what others go through.

People don't ask for a DNA or cervix inspection when they meet. Equally men don't ask to see another man's "meat and two veg" when a guy is in the men's room.

People perhaps like to make something out of nothing and exaggerate, saying to women that hairy men in dresses are going to attack you in the bathroom .

I wonder about the backstory to this ad

laika's picture

Everyone assumes the kid is just being a destructive brat for no reason, but maybe he/she was driven to a point of desperation by being dragged to the barber every other week and being told little boys don't wear dresses... and finally snapped. Which worked out to her advantage when she was taken to a shrink who instead of correcting the acting out behavior convinced the parents to address the girl's underlying gender dysphoria. It's a story right out of the Big Closet. And even better, the cost of her counseling sessions (not sure if the NHS covers stuff like this) were co-payed by "JOHN LEWIS MEDICAL INSURANCE, a name you can rely on!"

And the negative comments screaming about agendas being
shoved down their throat? These people are miserable
wretched sods whose only joy in life comes from
bitching + whining and hysterical overreaction
to shit that's none of their fucking business.
Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke!

I wondered what the point of it was

Angharad's picture

I suppose it could explain why John Lewis is losing money at the moment, as for getting upset about some stupid women raising cane, this woman will ignore both them and the advert. Perhaps it has a hidden agenda to stir up publicity by OTT feminists or trans activists. Can't see how it will make money for JW insurance.

Hi Angharad, Her nasty

leeanna19's picture

Hi Angharad, Her nasty comment has 1100 likes now, this must be very well organised .Someone has answered her but only has one like.

"Rosie it's just a very silly advert, if it were true the boy is, what 11? I hope you're joking with the patriarchy stuff.
It seems like an over reaction bordering on misandry, or is it the fact he is in dress that offends you?"

Any set of actions

crash's picture

Charley Brooker goes into a bit about how we can take almost any set of events and use them to tell a bunch of different stories. This particular avert is an example of story telling and subsequent alternative re-contextualization to support very different narratives.
To a surprising degree I'm sympathetic to one layer of the TERF argument: We do live in a deeply misogynistic culture. All that we see in news, entertainment, sport and the advertisement that surrounds it is filtered and approved by mostly male managers and directors. Much of what we see represents that bias. We who occupy some part of the transgender spectrum , indeed all humans, are expected to contend with that. Our views are shaped by that.

We cannot blame the actors in the piece for the story that is being told. Doing otherwise is foolish and ignorant.

See Dave Cappelle’s latest special too

gillian1968's picture

Dave Chappelle’s latest special on Netflix has also given some air to the TERF movement.
I actually haven’t watched it and don’t plan to.

But there are many YouTube videos responding to it.

Jessie Gender has a long one that doesn’t support his views but is somewhat understanding.
