Men's genes 'may limit lifespan'
Men carry the seeds of their own destruction in the genes present in their sperm, research suggests. Scientists working on mice have highlighted a specific gene that, although carried by both sexes, appears to be active only in males. They believe it allows males to grow bigger bodies - but at the expense of their longevity. The study, by Tokyo University of Agriculture, appears in the journal Human Reproduction.

As is usual in these studies, the research was carried out on mice, and the biologists concerned assume the results will apply to all mammals (including humans). The "From other news sites" box was almost as interesting as the article:

The Times of India - Why women outlive men? No sperm
Quite succinct, and an interesting spin...

The Daily Mail - Why women live so much longer than men (And, no, it's not because they have an easier life!)
Oh dear... yet another reason to hate Chicken Licken's favourite publication.

Men and women 'respond differently to danger'

Men and women may respond differently to danger, a brain scan study suggests. The researchers, from Jagiellonian University Hospital in Krakow, carried out scans on 21 men and 19 women.

Yes, another item of research from the Department of the Obvious - but even so, 40 volunteers seems quite low for genuine scientific research. I'm more used to seeing low figures hiding in the small print of adverts for the latest anti-wrinkle cream or hair dye - "83% of women claimed that our product reduced the appearance of wrinkles" (i.e. 60 out of the 72 who bothered replying to the survey...)

So women respond

with more emotion than men. Cor, you learn something new everyday, that makes me feel soooooo happy.

My toy box

is bigger 'cos I throw toys more often and would run out of toys otherwise. Does this mean that most women have bigger toy boxes?

Remember, there's lies, damned lies and statistics.
