I ran accross this nugget:

http://community.feministing.com/transgender-issues/

A commentary on the proposed changes to the DSM-IV for the new DSM-V, dropping the "Identity Disorder" from the name tag and reduce the stigma of it being a mental illness.
It would become "Gender Incongruence"
Also for the posties out there, good news! They want a fully transitioned person to be diagnosed as fully cured. This can be an issue in several career paths.
They wish to remove the sexuality aspect from it as well, gender incongruence and sexuality being two different issues.

Interesting web site for feminists that is trans-inclusive.

Thanks Michelle

I particularly like they have provided specifically for young kids in dealing with issues prior to the onset puberty. There has always been too much "Lets wait till he/she goes through puberty and see if they grow out of it" That must be horrific to a child looking at his father and older brothers thinking he is going to turn into a neanderthal.

DSM iv

Angharad's picture

There were allegations that this version DSM iv was largely written by those in the pay or had strong links with drug companies, so is this tome as influential as it used to be.

As for its successor, if it changes some conditions like GID to lifestyle choices and demedicalises them - good. The proposed changes to children's treatment is long overdue - how I wish it had been available when I was a child.

As far as I am concerned, the curing of my transsexualism was achieved when I was legally ressigned as female, which was some years after the medical reassignment.
