The nurse from my Endocrinologists office called and told me that she was sending my new prescriptions out to me. She did tell me that my blood sugar was elevated and they scheduled me for an appointment on December 10th. I am hoping and praying that I can get it down by modifying my diet and not have to start insulin. I hate needles anyway,so the idea of sticking myself a few times a day is not high on my list of things I want to get started doing. My family history is not on my side with regards to diabetes. I just hope I can change habits and take care of it that way.

Don't worry, Jen…

I was diagnosed diabetic (type 2) about 12 years ago and initially controlled it with pills. however that was a bit hit and miss, and I was put on to insulin. I now inject 3 times a day, and the most painful bit is pricking my finger for the blood/sugar test. The needles on my insulin pen are only 6mm (a quarter-inch) long and are very thin—almost as thin as a hair, and very rarely do I feel anything.

Regular testing and insulin keep me in balance, and if I'm a bit high I can use a few more units of insulin, if I am low, I will use fewer. That was the disadvantage of treating it with pills: they came in fixed sizes.

Believe me, it's no big deal—okay I was nervous as a kitten at frst, but I soon learned that it was easy-peasy.

Hugs,
Gabi.
