and to be honest, I've not really been following the coverage but I do know that Team GB claimed the cycling crown with 6 golds out of the 22 on offer, 1 ahead of the Netherlands, the only other nation to win more than 1 event. Overall our tiny islands came in fourth behind the behemoths of the US and China with host nation Japan getting home advantage for third although with a smaller total medal count, the UK's 22 golds more than twice that of any other European nation. But as they say, Its not the winning but the taking part that counts - but winning is nice!

Other stuff, well its been a week blighted by changeable weather, to translate for non Brits, there's been a fair bit of wet! I got wet on Thursdays shortish, well 82km, ride, I suffered a similar fate on yesterdays blackberrying walk and didn't escape entirely on todays 100+km spin. Hopefully the coming week will see some better weather so I'm hoping for some more adventurous rides.

Away from exercise, well I've already posted about my brush with debit card fraud but I haven't told you about killing my camera on Tuesday, a drop has dislodged something inside so I'm sans optical picture device for the time being. I do have another one but of course that's in storage back in Yorkshire so I'm bgrd until I go again, which is looking like late September. sigh

Don't You Count Russia?

joannebarbarella's picture

Oh! Pardon me. The Russian Olympic Committee.

You say GB won more than twice as many medals as any other European country. The ROC won 20 and in fact, when you add in silver and bronze they outdid the United Kingdom.

Just a thought. Y'all have a good day.

Russia

is mostly in Asia so its not very honest to include them in Europe besides which, strictly speaking they weren't a Russian team even if they were Russian nationals. Whichever way you count them, Team GB came 4th. France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands were only separated by their silver/bronze ratios, each claiming 10 Golds.

The UK is a minnow in terms of size and population compared to all the other 'players', that's without taking into account our absence from quite a few disciplines where bigger nations could be represented in everything. Interestingly, GB's medals featured very little of the arenas that we've previously done well in, Athletics was overall pretty poor, as were rowing, bowling and shooting instead we had success in new disciplines, BMX, Mountain biking - even skateboarding besides stepping up in swimming and gymnastics, we even stole a medal in weight lifting!

I'll stop harping on now
