Beat me to it again :)

I read the article over breakfast. Rather I skimmed it as I have zero interest in pop and rock music and I'd never heard of either Laura or the band. Are they well known amongst aficionados?

Never the less an interesting story that seems to reflect the experiences of some people I've grown to know here (well virtually 'know', I guess). I'm not TS, though I once thought I was, but I can just about imagine the mental torture people in her position undergo and the big decisions they have to make. Inevitably there are compromises, particularly when there are close relationships and children involved; it's just knowing which ones to make.

As ever, there is so much rot in the comments (mixed with common sense and courtesy)

Hmmm.

'Rot', 'common sense' and 'courtesy'? Interesting combination of attributes.

Robi, that is how I find it every time. There are some lovely people on there, but also visiting trolls (in such stories, usually of either the religious right or feminazi persuasion) and the same nonsense is paraded each time. The starting point is usually the rubbish about socially-constructed gender, but then the bigots arrive. One rant about 'real women can have babies', a subject Angharad herself has thrown a lot of words at, was truly foaming-mouthed but was removed from the comments as it was so barking. Despite that, there is a core of people who like to have a debate, or discussion, and all without the need to turn nasty. Common sense and courtesy indeed.

Ah

I thought you were referring to my comments. I read the article in the paper (we're subscribers) so I didn't see the comments in the on-line version. There are certainly a lot of trolls on the Guardian web-site but I guess that's the case with any on-line forum.

No wonder I was puzzled.

Dear Robi

We go back years now. Would I ever complain about your comments here? You might just be able to spot mine on the net Grauniad, though...

What hurts the most for me in the comments...

...besides the incivility of some? The folks who presume to be my spokesperson for my faith. I 'have' Jesus, and I'm transgendered, and it bothers me that so many folks are dismissive of my beliefs because they don't align with theirs. I am completely enamored with her story, and I eagerly look forward to what might take place in the overall music community regarding others who have yet to take the same steps. I wish her nothing but the best! PS - thanks for the blog and link, Ang!

"I was a teenage anarchist" is a pretty good song from "Against Me!" and got a reasonable amount of airplay a year or so ago. :-)

There are several things she said that resonated with my own feelings. Living within my own head, and the drive to write about my experiences are only two of them. I wish her the best of fortunes.

...the photo in the article is good. This one is nice as well; such a happy smile.
