"Don't power it up."

Sometimes professionals (sigh, usually for a fee) can recover some of the hard-drive data. Closest such to me would be The Geek Squad at Best Buy.

If it's just one failed component, replacing that one might be much cheaper than a complete new unit. But with the way price-performance is going, and how computer technology 'ages', a new unit might be your best choice. (Glad I don't have to decide ...)

PS: Don't pay for a new Microsoft Office suite or even parts of it. Look into PortableApps.com. Their LibreOffice suite is a look-alike/work-alike >free< replacement for MS Word and Office.

LibreOffice

I will second the recommendation of NOT paying for Microsoft Office!

LibreOffice runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. And is free for the download. The installer (download) is much smaller than Microsoft. And in my opinion has a much better language support. At last count it had spell-checkers et.al. for more than 250 languages and/or dialects. All of them free!

PortableApps has the advantage that it runs straight from a CD or USB drive. So you can take your personal work environment with you to any windows computer anywhere. You can add not only LibreOffice, but many other Open Source Software for free.

That said, you could put your whole work environment on a USB drive and use just about any windows computer out there, with no need to take your own computer along. Just make sure to regularly make a copy of your USB drive.

I use LibreOffice on my Linux machines and on my Windows Virtual (The only way I run Windows). It is a very full featured suite.

Sorry your computer is gone, Dot.

Power Supply Just Die?

I've had that happen more than once. Put a new one in and I was back in business. That sometimes works. It amazes me that these people that answer can not directly address the stated issue.

All that was said is that the

All that was said is that the computer was toast.

We don't know if it's a laptop or a desktop. Power supply is probably the most frequent, but I have a NVR system that has around 10 failed capacitors on the motherboard. I've had to repair several servers with that same problem. The hard drive could have gone south. The video card could have blown, memory could have failed, and the entire thing could have ended up in four inches of water (yes, I've had that happen with customer systems. Tropical storm Alison wasn't fun, neither was Ike or Harvey)

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Thanks to others ...

... who expanded on what I said about the free LibreOffice suite, and other uses for free software, and "put my working life on a USB and travel".

Bill Gates of Microsoft has spent some years as the first or second richest person in the World .. He doesn't need our help :) .
