They said it was impossible...

Finding out how many people read my story, that is, rather than simply clicking on it, giving it a cursory examination, and then going onto something else. When I last posted a blog on this, I was surprised how many responded with a closed answer that, "It was impossible."

Well, I always enjoy a challenge, so with my last two stories, I decided to separate out the ending of the story and post it in a separate file accessed by clicking on a "Final Chapter" link at the end. The only way of accessing that link was either by going to the end of the posted part of the story, or to My Stories page.

To head off issues that some browsers pre-fetch all hyper-linked pages before the user even asks for them, I hid a link to a blank page behind a full stop (period in American). From that I discovered only about 1% of hits cause the blank page to be accessed, so pre-fetching is a negligible factor.

About one third of total hits resulted in a link to the Final Chapter in the first story, and a quarter in the second story. About 3% of all hits, or 10% of all reads resulted in someone clicking on the Good Story button.

So, I feel reasonably satisfied that I have a broad measure of the number of reads, and that the difference between the two stories demonstrates that one story was more readable than the other.

The two stories were both in the Decade of Big Busts series - No 3 A Bun in the Oven and No 4 Waiting for Godo

Nothing is Impossible

Reminds me of the phrase "Nothing is Impossible...it just takes a little longer". What a clever way to find out your counts. For full disclosure as a reader, I have read the first Big Bust ( only attaching a kudo) which I enjoyed, but was distracted by RL for a bit. I've started No. 4 three times but can't seem to get any traction yet. Have patience dear writer, I'll make the grade eventually!

Interesting Method

This was how a paysite I once worked on was going to work, by putting the ending of stories behind another link. Only members could use the end link and their accounts would be debited for each visit with half the money going to author and half to site. The site never got off the ground but I'm surprised no one has ever tried to make it work.

Your results, btw, agree with my intuition, that only a quarter to half of all hits are actual reads.

Erin

big bust idea

I liked the touch screen tech angle thing, not remotely possible which makes it great fiction. The bodysuit idea or torsolet, bustlet, are Your ideas which i like. Confused? Dont be its a complement from me.

Unfortunately ...

... your cunning plan doesn't account for really dedicated fans like me who have all your stories tucked away on their HDs :) I just open your stories so that I can give you a kudos, I don't read them on-line any longer.

I notice that you haven't published your results but I really hope you were satisfied as well as gratified.

Like me, who didn't get it!

Not realising your subtle ploy I went to FM and read the endings there. So there!

Anyway I've told you often enough how I love your stories, so maybe you'll believe me now,
