TOO COLD TO WRITE

By Touch the Light

British Summer Time starts tomorrow. Summer? Ha!

I've been trying to write. I have loads of ideas floating around inside my head. But will my fingers obey the commands my brain gives them?

No, because they're half frozen!

This time last year I was sitting in a beer garden somewhere in Northumberland drinking pear cider with half a bucket of ice and wiping the sweat from my brow.

This year?

I'm sitting two feet away from a radiator that's blasting out heat. I'm wearing two T-shirts, a buttoned-up shirt, an open shirt on top of that and an outdoor coat, I have a duvet draped over me and I'm still bloody freezing!

So apologies to anyone waiting for chapter 5 of 'Goodbye Master Stokes', a third of it is ready but at the moment all I can trust my hands to do is click the mouse for videos of Frank Zappa, It Bites and Tame Impala on You Tube.

Not a flake of snow either.

The north wind doth blow, and we shall just feel f-in' miserable.

Glad that's off my chest!

Comments

Yep.

You've got my sympathy girl.

We used to have winters like this back in the forties, fifties and sixties but then global warming arrived and, well, there you have it. As our 'cross-pond sisters say; Go figure!

Fortunately we southern Taffs have escaped this one; well, the snow at least. Trouble is, it's the snow that brings people together as everybody has to get to work. Cold without snow is just so unfair. We've still got the bloody freezing wind though and my cycling has taken a severe battering. This morning (Sat 7 am) and it's the first day for nearly two weeks that the bloody Nor'easter has deceased and I've been able to get out on my beloved Mirander.
Cycling in the wind is bloody miserable at the best of times but a wind of minus 3 degrees is just bloody fatal and therefore stupid, mainly cos' of the ice.

Stay warm now girl! I don't want you catching a cold and us having to miss the next fix of 'Goodbye Master Stokes'.

Have you insulated your 'ouse? I'm currently lining the inside bedroom walls with 'Thermo-block; large sheets of 8'x 4' x 1" double foil-backed foam, screwed to the wall them layered over with 9mm ply. It makes a marvellously warm house and the cat has consequently moved from the drawing room to the bay bedroom cos' it's warmer. Our cat is a perfect thermoclinic indicater. Her favourite spots around the house join up to make a perfect thermohyatt.

Well that's all for now guu-uurl; stay warm, stay safe.

Bevs.

PS.

Are you going to 'Sparkle' in Manchester on 10th/11th/& 12th July this year? If you are, perhaps we could meet for coffee.

PPS

I'm not always as wild as I appear in some of the piccies.

Sparkle Up!

I think you look positively charming, Beverley!

I must admit I had to google the Sparkle thing. It looks like fun, though it's not really my scene. But I know plenty of people who'd have a great time at an event like that, so I'll spread the word and see what happens.

Been a bit parky

down here too, have no idea what the heating bill will be - may have to eat the cats. I have however been cycling, albeit not as far as usual, the wind doesn't improve the experience.

Warming ???

We keep being assured that there's "Global warming"

I just think they've got their thermometers upside-down.

Cold and global warming???

The last article I read seemed to be saying that global warming wasn't really "warming" as such. It was an increase to the depth of the temperature extremes with the average temperature moving slightly upward. Places where the winter to summer temperature range was 60 degrees (C) we could now (after ten years of "warming") expect to see upwards of an 80 degree range while the average temperature shift was perhaps only 5 or 6 degrees. Going back to the records I've kept here at home that seems to be borne out - more or less. I guess the most important factor in it all is the oceans and the underwater "jet stream". (I don't remember what they call it - something or other current).

Watching the dogs and cats, they put on a lot more hair (fur/ what have you) for this winter than they did for the last one and now they are shedding it all over the house so summer is on its way. Not soon enough unless it plans on being unreasonably hot this summer. I can always start a fire to begin to get warm but I must have missed the classes on starting a cold to cool off.

Anesidora ;-(

cold

well then i wont say anything about the nice weather we are having in Canada.the snow is all but gone here. it must be that big storm hanging over the Atlantic ocean its huge from the Caribbean to Greenland oh yeah as i type this warm sunshine is flowing in to my living room ( soaks up the warmth) spring is coming don't worry

hugs of warmth rues

Sitting here in the middle of

Sitting here in the middle of Canada where the weather forecast was calling for mixed snow and rain for today, but they only got it half right... watching it snow right now. I'd hoped for rain to help cut the snowbanks down to reasonable sizes.

Warm thoughts to all.

Some days you're the pigeon, some days you're the statue

Hah!

You're just nesh!* Have you no pride? All my friends from the NE laugh at the cold :)

Must admit I'm fed up with the cold too. However, Easter has always been cold. I used to compete in a long distance motor cycle trial every Easter which started Friday night in the Midlands and ended in Cornwall. It always snowed as we crossed the moors over night in N Devon and the sun always shone when we got to Newquay :) At least that's how it seemed. At this time of year back in the 80s we did a hostel tour in mid-Wales on out tandem and we got the lot! Made it very memorable.

So get writing!!! Your readers need you!

Seems To Have Worked

My late-night rant seems to have done the business. The wind has dropped and the temperature in County Durham today reached the sub-tropical high 40s.

I think the comments on global warming are spot on. More heat = more instability = more extremes. There's also the melting Arctic ice, which could cool the North Atlantic Drift and give N W Europe some pretty appalling winters.

Always nice to have something to look forward to.
