you know, I often praise the level of tolerance I receive here in Edmonton, but there have been some ... troubling signs that the forces of bigotry are trying to push back.

For example, there was recently an attempt to create a resolution that would make the provincial government "support" any students that wanted to create a gay-straight. alliances at their schools.

Despite the fact that such "support" would be mostly symbolic, it was defeated.

To make matters worse, the ruling Conservative party is in deep trouble, and their possible successors are a party called the Wild Rose, who once tried to pass legislation that would allow government workers to discriminate against gay couples looking for marriage licences, even though gay marriage is legal in Canada.

Its possible things could get very dicey here ...

politics as usual

When BC delisted (no longer covered) SRS I became worried about the govt. Nothing ever got worse though.

I think your conservatives will pick a new leader, blame the previous leader and not hold an election for as long as they can so they can repair their reputation. Politics as usual.

ps. I've read there is a movement in each province in Canada to either get "sex" removed from birth certificates or to allow people to voluntarily change their birth assigned sex designation by simple request without surgery to change their body sex. BC even gave first reading (commonly done as a matter of course) to a bill that would allow people to change their birth sex. In politics its common for these kinds of bills to be given 3 readings...before any serious discussion is done on them. Its after the 4th reading it gets into law. So don't hold your breaths.

Edmonton and the Mormons

I recently discovered that the Southern Half of Alberta is strongly Mormon. Hmmmm Mean while, 56% of the people in Utah, favor passage of SSM. So, yes things could get roiled up a bit.

Also, from a "Top Drawer" Mormon, they are very concerned about litigation on these issues going clear to the American Supreme Court.
