Thongs - that string goes where? Ouch!
For me, a thong would just put a hic-up or minor derailment in the flow of the story. Mostly because I would think the character wearing same is "dopey",
Same as a Lady wearing heels before, during, and after an airline flight. Ouch, just ouch. And just >what< were they thinking ... ?
I kinda like control briefs and panty-girdles; depending on plot, they can put a nice delay in, uhm, the physical action. They can also help hide 'boy bits'.
"What works" best with the plot and setting should help decide. Example: "Spanx" in a Victorian or Medieval story ... hard 'no', unless s/he is time-hopping.
I'm not good at decisions
Boxers or briefs never challenged me. Since my heritage is Celtic perhaps going commando is viable. If fashion sense is a guide, I'm definitely a "tidy whitey". I guess it all depends and I do mean " Depends". What was the question again?

Depends on what outerwear is being worn.
If some is first time being introduce to panties and that is pivotal to them becoming hooked on cross-dressing then nylon either full brief or hip huggers. If later on they are wearing anything close fitting around the hips or upper thigh then adding a control brief to keep the bump from showing is a must.
