The Green Fog~16

I had a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. In the distance I could see the huge mountain range that included our destination, Ben Nevis. We were so near yet so far. I could not believe that after all we had been through, we would have this horrid green splodge of death in front of us barring our way…

CHAPTER 15

The pod door swinging open caused me to open my eyes. Linda was smiling down at me.

“Feeling better, Mary?”

I sat up and noticed that my injuries from that beating Karen gave me seemed to have pretty much healed. The pod was a good medical unit.

“Yes, much. Where are we?”

Linda laughed.

“You are not going to believe it. We just landed outside Basteria.”

My eyes opened wide.

“Now, don’t panic. Karen said that a special event was about to happen and she needs more security right away. She said you could come to the base on the regular transport in two days. As a matter of fact, she wants me to come with you.”

“Uh oh! That means things are happening faster than we thought.

My shoulder met his chest and we went down to the ground. As I pushed myself off of him, he groaned heavily. A red spot of blood was spreading on his shirt. I heard some one running towards us and I looked up to see Matt.

CHAPTER 9

Linda looked puzzled for a few seconds then her eyes widened in recognition. I quickly grabbed her hand.

“I’m Rusty Allen.”

“OK”

I pointed to Matt.

“This is Matt Browning. We just got here.”

Linda looked over at Matt and the guys lying at his feet.

“You’re pretty good in a fight. I need a bouncer. You are it.”

CHAPTER 8

Mary got up and tried to pull me to my feet but, I was so drunk, I fell into a table and lamp with a loud crash. Sam came running in.

“Matt, did John attack you?”

“No, he is just drunk on his butt. Why don’t you go get us some food in town and I will sober him up. Don’t worry, I can handle him.”

A Choice For Tomorrow

Since I haven't managed to wow you all with another episode about Jamie, The Cliffside Heroine, which is in the offing, I have posted a new Sci-Fi story--just a short on Fictioneer.

You can find it here and I would be really, really happy if you'd leave a comment and let me know what you think.

FYI, Cliffside Heroine 6 is in the making and will be on the way soon--I promise.

CHAPTER 6

We had walked a little ways into the mine when there was a loud noise and we were suddenly thrown to the ground. Rocks and dust poured over us. I looked up in time to see a very large beam falling toward me. I tried to roll away but it landed on my legs trapping me. Then, the lights went out.

The Green Fog~12

We stayed the night and I was almost comforted by being in familiar surroundings–but not quite, because I was wondering if our guess had been right. Were Auntie Betty and Uncle Archie across the water in Dunoon or had they been caught out in the fog, like so many others?

CHAPTER 5

When I saw those miners beating up on poor Gina, my past flashed before my eyes. I was not going to let thugs kill another person I cared about. Rising from my seat, I picked up a knife that was lying on the table. When I reached Thelma, she had her big foot poised over Gina’s neck. I knew that as soon as she stomped down, Gina would be dead.

“Well, the changes made to you are pretty good. You look like a woman even up close. There is one thing, though, that could give you away. You don’t have a vagina.”

“Of course, I don’t have a vagina and I don’t want one either.”

The Green Fog~10

‘Everyone down on the floor,’ I ordered as I looked in the large mirrors and reversed with considerable difficulty.

It was easier said than done backing up the bus like that, with bullets whizzing all around–it was so flaming big! Luckily, the people firing at us were rotten shots and I managed to get out of the line of fire before getting pranged.

As soon as I could, I stopped, gently nudging a red telephone box, but considering everything it wasn’t a bad effort.

I gripped the handle of the umbrella tightly. Eve held on to Nicola by the shoulders. Ben looked alert and ready to pounce. Jeanie was terrified–

She opened the door with a rush–

I raised the umbrella, ready to brain whoever was outside––

The Green Fog~8

‘Quick, Jeanie,’ I shouted. ‘Oxygen!’

We all rushed to the back, almost trampling over one another in the desperate hurry to get to the oxygen cylinders. As we put the masks on, I looked over my shoulder feverishly at the green fog advancing ever closer.

Amaria: Chapter 1: The Apprentice

Kuval, Manara Space Station’s administrator and senior scientist stared out his large oval window towards his home planet Amaria, a blue and green planet with cloud formations over most of the larger of the three continents. Must be raining today he thought as he reflected on his twenty years of service to ASI (Amarian Space Institute). Kuval could not believe the progress made so far in technological growth in the last few years, he was happy with the contributions that his station had made for this endeavor over the last year.

Sappho by Aardvark

This is one of main favourite stories. I thought I'd check its date to see if it would make the 1-, 2-, or 3- year list, unfortunately it misses out by a couple of months.

I recently picked up a two decade best of SF omnibus, of the stories I have read so far, none could match this work by Aardvark.

If you haven't come across it before then give it a try.
