Gotta love people who honk their horn .1 second after the light turns green. So thoughtful of them to give a person so much time to take their foot off the brake and hit the accelerator.

*** Start of Rant ***

To the person who thoughtfully vouched for other drivers this morning with their horn. I appreciate your thoughtfulness... I really do. But, while you must know the people who were on our left, as you let me know with your horn that they weren't going to run their red light, in my years of experience driving, I have seen people do just that. Even people that I know, so I kinda like to verify that myself. Again, your thoughtfulness in vouching for others is a wonderful thing, but while driving, its probably a good thing to concentrate on yourself. Not others.

In the current age of mobile phone abuse...

... while driving it is very often an only way to make it on time.
Things in life happen. Accidents, illnesses, broken equipment, and so on that could require you to get somewhere as soon as.

If I have to use my phone

while driving then I'll stop and make the call or calls. If I'm going any distance, the phone is put into flight mode and kept there until I stop either at my destination or for a comfort break.
It is no use hurrying to get somewhere only to be involved in an accident yourself. Then you won't get there but there again, I'm early for just about everything.
It isn't you that you need to worry about it is the others on the road.
As a Motorcyclist, I can't use the cursed thing while riding anyway. You need to keep an eye out for the other idiots on the road and yes despite it being illegal here, they are still often on their phone.

there is

Maddy Bell's picture

a time and place for horns and phones, in the UK, in theory hooting at someone to move quicker is actually against the law and the use of a phone by the driver of a motor vehicle whilst driving (which includes pausing at signals) is expressly forbidden. Doesn't stop either happening and until such time as road policing is improved there is no deterrent to such law breaking - in other words, it'll always happen.

Sometimes you have to get it off your chest but if I had a rant for every instance of bad roadmanship I am subject to I'd be ranting pretty much 24/7!

Yesterday for example, there were lots of groups of motorbikes terrorising the roads, was the wheelie when passing me needed? did several t heads need to close pass me when there was a full 14ft lane to use? Did the goon passing on double whites need to pass me and the car in front and nearly wipe out the oncoming cyclist? The answer is of course no to all of those. Then there was the 'person' weaving in and out of the traffic on an electric scooter at about 30mph, the cars in wrong lanes switching without as much as a backward glance and the myriad numbers not bothering to signal intent at junctions at all or so late they may as well not have bothered. And there were more and that's just one day.

In the scenario that the OP tells, my reaction is to be even slower setting off, oh dear you had to wait another 2 seconds, nothing is that time critical.

there, that's my rant

There really are a load of pratts

riding Motorcycles these days.
Wheelies while riding in traffic seem to be a bit of a thing at the moment. Numpties the lot of them.

I was out on the bike but I only went as far as Devizes. I was overtaken by six or seven death wish riders near Amesbury. They did their manouvre on a blind LH bend. Double White Lines mean nothing to this lot.

sometimes I wonder if it is worth going out on the bike these days.

Seem like every moron look at others moron filming themselves doing stupidity on the road...
For them it is a show of 'How' it supposed to be done.
or they want their two second of fame and try to film themselves doing stupider stuff than the one before them...!

Sometimes I think Motorcycle riders have death wish

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

In the good old US of A, motorcycle riders in the state of California lobbied for and got passed a law that allows them to pass between slow moving lanes of other vehicles, that is; using the line as a lane for motorcycles.

My apologies to sensible MC riders. I know many, but as pointed out it's the idiots you have to watch out for.

Happiness is being all dressed up and HAVING some place to go.
Semper in femineo gerunt

and bikers all over the world do it. I do it in traffic and at stop lights.

Many car drivers in the UK make room for bikers especially during commutes. But there are always those who spoil it for the rest of us especially those who really want to be on the race track and then the morgue.
I don't ride a pseudo race bike with stupid exhausts but a long distance tourer.

when I was a teenager, I rode a 550 and at 140mph, I got to thinking, what would happen if I hit found a rock one one of these turns?

I ended up slowing down overall.

Don't forget

the guy with a 6ltr Jeep with twin stack exausts (no silencers) that goes past my home between 04:05 and 04:12 monday to Friday.

My car is Electric and is almost silent. Powered at this time of year by the sun. Roll on when we can get all noisy vehicles off the road.

I drive a hybrid that is very quiet even when the engine is running, let alone operating entirely on electricity. I have often wondered how much more peaceful and less smelly cities will be when internal combustion engines are gone.

Rose's picture

I definitely agree about the number of rants I would have if I were to rant at every display of idiocy from other drivers,

By and large, my jobs have usually included driving, from teaching to hauling kids in a big yellow bus. Up until a year and a half ago, My wife and I both drove uber and lyft as our jobs. I love being self employed except at tax time.

when I had a tumor removed from my brain, I was left with nasty memory problems so I don't drive very much anymore. Sometimes I wonder why it's me who doesn't drive any more.

Love of aphorisms

My love of aphorisms urges me to post:

“Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?”
― George Carlin

I find that active cruise control makes me an idiot more often than it makes me a maniac.
