It seemed any doubts the boys had about wearing kilts were quickly dealt with and I half expected them to be running about painted in woad,or the Windsor and Newton equivalent. They asked me to get the DVD of Braveheart over which I had misgivings–it’s a bit violent and the best bit was the music by James Horner, yeah him of Titanic fame. I told them I’d speak to Gramps about it.

I had another shock, it seems I had ‘slept’ through the election and we now had a namesake for a Prime Minister. I don’t suppose my single vote would have made any difference but I do like to exercise it, and it would have been the first parliamentary election I could have voted in as me. I suppose next year, I’ll have to take part in the census–I was still in school at the last one.

On the Saturday morning, I saw the boys out in the garden fencing with two pieces of stick, I tapped the window but they just ran off and presumably continued out of sight. Oh well, they are boys so I should expect it.

I hadn’t seen Henry since I suggested the bank was under attack. I began to wonder if my intuition was failing me, in which case was my belief that Simon was still alive, also a delusion. I refused to give up hope, I had to believe he was coming home again–anything else would be disloyal to him. He’s a tough cookie–so he’ll survive.

I wondered what the purpose was in calling me that night? I can’t believe the accident was anything other than that–an accident. The guy in the van apparently died at the scene–the steering wheel turned him into a human kebab. I shuddered at the thought–what a wretched way to die. Mind you the airbag in my car caught my nose and face, which was where some of the blood came from. Thankfully it didn’t break it, so I didn’t lose my girlish charms–ha ha. My face is still bruised but not as bad as before. I’m driving the Mondeo until Simon turns up and can sort out the car situation. He did promise me another Merc which would be nice, but let’s get him home first.

Leon arrived, so I won’t get much help from Julie when she gets back from the salon. Stella drove her into work to give me a little lie in, with three giggling aliens. It’s not the same without listening to them tormenting Simon–I wonder where he is?

Whenever I think of him, all I see is darkness. At first I thought it meant he was dead then on reflection, decided he could be blindfolded.

I was doing the lunch while the two boys helped Tom and Leon plant some more vegetables and also some flowers for me. I had bought some dahlias a while ago they should be showing by now.

My mind was definitely absorbed by the food I was preparing, the boys had asked for sausage and mash for tea, so I was making egg salad for lunch and boiling a dozen eggs was a bit of a pain, trying not to have them pop in the pan before they were hard boiled.

The phone rang, I answered it, expecting it to be something mundane like the Pope was asking for advice on contraception, or President Obama wanting to adopt a dormouse–you know the sort of stuff that happens.

“Hello?”

“Ah, girlyboy, you are still alive–your husband won’t be much longer unless you do as we tell you.”

Was this the ransom demand? Had I sent Henry on a wild goose chase?

“Who are you?” I’m not really violent but a large part of me wanted to meet this insulting cow and punch her lights out.

“That is not important, you will be called soon, be prepared to do exactly as we say or your precious Simon will breathe his last.”

“How do I know he’s still alive?”

“You don’t.”

“If anything has happened to him–I shall hunt you down and personally destroy you like the sick puppy you are.”

“Making idle threats doesn’t worry me, girly boy.”

“You wouldn’t be the first who underestimated me and went home in a body bag.”

“Do all you fake women have such fertile imaginations?”

“Probably not, but I hope you’ve made your last will and testament and made your peace with your god, because it is my intention to send you to meet him.”

“You sound more like a man than a woman.”

“The female of the species is more deadly than the male–as you will find out quite soon enough–just don’t start reading any long novels or watching any serials.”

“You are so funny, lady boy, maybe I shall kill you and all the world will then see what a sham you are.”

“Feel free to come round and try it, but bring your own shroud.”

“Maybe I would kill all your children first before you, while you watch helplessly, although eunuchs can’t have children, unless they steal other people’s. Is that what you did.”

“I am going to kill you, you sick bitch.” My blood was practically at boiling point, but I was trying to sound calm, even though my tummy was doing backflips and somersaults.

“You don’t even know who I am.”

“I’ll find you–so prepare to die.”

“Oh for a sissy boy, you do talk a good fight, don’t you.”

“For a Russian you speak with very little accent.”

“My dear, sissy boy, I’m as English as you are.”

“I’m not English–so do your homework, bitch, and take good care of my husband and I may kill you quickly.”

“You will be contacted and given instructions, do exactly as you are told or Simon will die horribly.”

“I’m not doing anything until I know he’s alive.”

“You’d better, or you’ll guarantee his death.”

“No–you’d better prove to me that he’s alive and unhurt, or you’ll be wasting your breath, and I’d save that if you can, while you can. Prepare to die, bitch.”

“You are starting to annoy me, I shall have him hurt for that.”

“Be very careful what you do to him, because I’ll do it tenfold to you.”

“I am so scared, I have goosey bumps on my arms.” I knew now she wasn’t a native, she was probably Russian.

“Don’t worry, death sorts that out along with all your other problems–you ugly cow.”

She laughed and rang off. I put the phone down and it rang almost immediately.

“Hello?”

“Hi Lady Cameron, Special Branch here, you kept her on long enough for us to do a trace. A squad is heading over to give her a welcome.”

“Be careful, I don’t want Simon injured.”

“We have some experts in dealing with these situations assisting us.”

“I’m pleased to hear it. Thank you um–who are you?”

“Detective Inspector Wheatland.”

“If you catch them, I’d like five minutes alone with her.”

“If we do, you know that’s not possible.”

“A girl can dream.”

“Of what, though–murderous intent?”

“Gosh you must be psychic.”

“No, I have a few minutes of you two trading death threats.”

“Why are Special Branch involved?”

“Your husband is quite important.”

“He is to me.”

“I’m sure. We’ll be in touch, ma’am.”

“Thank you.”

I went off to wait, and while I did so, I raised the lid on the well in the garage and retrieved something, made by Smith and Wesson–a British owned company, apparently.

I can't help but think that it's Brown-Coward. She is the vindictive bully type.

I think not, Stan

I believe Cathy would definitely recognize her voice, or manner of speech, even if she tried to disguise it. Without expensive equipment, she could not disguise her voice enough that it would not be fairly obvious it was disguised, even if the speaker was unrecognizable.

At least, all the software I've heard can't do well in real time.

Holly

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Holly

Russians, huh?

You'd think that lot would have learned to leave Cathy and her family alone by this point!

Ah well, I can see another batch of dead mobsters in the near future....

Hey, does that qualify as clairvoyance?

Let's hope...

Special Branch are more 'with it' than the Secret Service (aka MI5) from the early 800s. And where there's a will, there's a way - Cathy will ensure she gets a slice of the action. No doubt we'll see how intelligent or stupid the latest batch of Russian friends are (as well as Special Branch) - did the Russians call from their base or from another location? Will Special Branch keep someone monitoring the phone line? Have they got anyone monitoring Cathy's house, the salon, or the school?

(Oh gawd, that list of questions is starting to sound like a dodgy 1960's serial. Oh well, might as well continue...)

Find out, only in the next exciting episode of, "The Daily Dormouse!"

(No, I won't get my coat, because I didn't bring it - it may be midnight but it's still 16°C out there!)

Greetings

Thank you for another chapter of keeping us on the edge of our seats, while waiting for a cliffhanger.

Do Smith and Wesson make poison arrows?

Ah, she's slid back to her "Lara Croft" days, she has! I wonder if she'll get her shot at the hapless bitch?

G

I too prefer the bow...

Somehow, perforating the baddies with arrows seems so much more satisfying than neat little bullet holes. The surprise factor on them when they see one of their companions in crime suddenly grow this stick of wood through him or her has to be pretty debilitating too.

Very glad to see that Cathy is preparing for action. Better get those boys to safety right now! Hate having any of the kids out of sight when there is trouble brewing.

Nice episode Angharad!

Trust me

A S&W of reasonable caliber with the proper loads only makes neat entry holes. The exit wounds are decidedly not neat, and extremely painful. Cathy is a mother lion, defending her family, God help those who threaten it.

Women are better shots than men?

I can't remember where I heard it but it was just the other day. The Target Expert said that with Pistols, women are better. HMMMMM.

Please don't be harsh with me, I am only repeating what I heard.

K

With her intuition

... she might be on her way to being the Great Dormouse (lady) Detective. Lucky for Cathy she knew how to give as good she gets, taunt-wise.

Nooowwww, who could be this nincompoop who thinks they can get one past Cathy?

Kim

The best laid plans.....

How dumb can the bad guys be? They take Simon and threaten Cathy's family, then expect her to cooperate. The person even let Cathy control the conversation.

I hope the Special Branch is really on the ball. I hope they catch them. Then again, I do abhor violence generally. The exception is when (1) it is intentionally directed at me and my family and (2) started by the other side. I would say the gloves are off. Dispatching evil doers with Smith and Wesson is a lot more humane then skewering them with a meter long arrow. Never start a fight but always finish it and never play by the rules.

Thanks for keeping this going. I enjoy this not only because you tell a good story but, it deals with adults and their issues. Thanks again.

Sphere of Protection

I believe that the police who have had the unfortunate assignment of being outside of Cathy’s sphere of protection have come off rather badly in the earlier encounters. I suspect it may be Cathy who ends up protecting the Special Branch troops.

Also, I suspect the original plan was to kidnap Cathy to ensure Simon's cooperation.

Or perhaps

Cathy should have had some help from these coppers.

Did Smith and Wesson make

Did Smith and Wesson make bows? Cathy is so much better with her bow and arrows than with a handgun; besides it is much, much more quiet to use and won't disturb the Special Branch 'boys and girls' like a loud report from a firearm would. Who ever the numbskull is that decided to take on Cathy happens to be, they are definitely 'stepped into it' up to their necks which is where they just might find an arrow protruding soon. Jan

Blood thirsty

And I can't blame her. Here in the States, the call would have been made from a twenty dollar throw away phone with no waay to trace it.....pretty careless on an amateur's part. I know she has amassed quite a collectin of things in her vioent wanderings, but with the highly restrictive attitude over there, I wonder if even Cathy and company can keep out of trouble if the well contains a handgun. Of course Smith and Wesson have made more lethal weapons than just handguns, and even many non-lethal that she could have pocketed also. Hope she gets a chance to use whatever it is, but if Special Branch or New Scotland Yard, or whoever is involved is on their toes, they will keep her away and resolve the problem handily.

Pay as you go phones

That's actually not true. At least in the US, all phones have the 911 tracing stuff built in. In fact, if you have an older phone that you want to get activated on a service, if it doesn't have that ability, they're required by law to _not_ activate it.

The best they could do is call from the mobile while on the move, then toss it out the window. That way, the phone might be found, but the caller might get away.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

Easy As Falling Down A Well

OK, OK, so I pinched the subject line from Part 137: Sorry Angharad.

How did the guns get down the well? The Bike Archive (link below) has a search function that will allow you to find text or phrases across any of the first 1,000 archived parts. Searching for "the well" produced four hits, one of which is in part 806:

“Come on, Babes, let’s go in.” He put his arm around me and we went inside. We sat and had a cuppa. I felt exhausted and not a little scared. When I told Simon, he pointed out that we had two guns with reasonably full magazines. I pointed out that one of them had killed someone and the other had wounded someone. We could be in deep trouble if someone wanted to make it difficult for us.

“You don’t think they’d do that, do you?”

“Why not? We’re sitters aren’t we? Hand guns are illegal—they don’t need anything else, do they?”

“Maybe not. So what do we do? Bury them in the garden like the IRA?”

“I’ve got a better idea. Wrap them in some plastic bags.”

Simon put each pistol in a carrier bag and rolled it up, then taped it sealed. Then he put the two into another bag and sealed it, then did the same again. Meanwhile, I found a long piece of strong string. I tied it around the guns and knotted it firmly. I carried the bundle out into the garage and Simon followed me: I lifted some boards on the floor of the garage and pointed at a flagstone beneath them, indicating I wanted it lifted. He shook his head but set to in lifting the heavy slab.

He was about to say something when I hushed him, we had no idea what sort of devices might be around the place. Underneath the stone was a well, with a drop of about ten feet to the water. Across the middle of the gap was a metal bar, which might have been some part of the well structure or simply a means of supporting the stone capping it. I tied the cord around the bar and lowered the guns into the water. Simon replaced the stone and I put the boards back over it. Even a sniffer dog would have difficulty finding that in a few hours, after our scents faded. To help the cause I sprayed air freshener all over it.

Curiously, the guns are from the last encounter with the Russian mob. What is that they say about what goes around?

Interesting Twist...

I do wonder where the caller's from. (I won't call her a "bitch" as that's not very nice to those of the canine persuasion.) Goosey Bumps is an interesting turn of phrase.

Also interesting that Cathy's line was Tapped. Nice of them to ring her up and tell her. I wonder how long it'll be before she's PISSED that someone's listening in on her phone calls...

Thanks,
Ann

I Still Think Henry And Simon Have A Secret

jengrl's picture

I still think Henry and Simon are involved in the spy game and the bank is a cover for being involved in much deeper things. I can just see a scene played out at some point where Simon confesses he's a spy and Cathy slugs him like Jamie Lee Curtis does to Arnold Schwartzeneggar in "True Lies" They would both have to have a High Security clearance with all the people they know . Of course, being Aristocrats will open up quite a few doors too. It just seems that Simon being gone all week on "bank" business is too convenient of a cover. I'm probably way off, but it is fun to speculate.

Mr Late

Gosh things hotting up now.
Better a silent powerful cross-bow than a noisy bang-shoot. - better odds if the attacker is outnumbered. Attack is the best form of defence, it sets the opposition at an immediate disadvantage. Silence is golden it brings fear and fear brings mistakes.
Loving it Angharad.

As always

I'm shaking my head at how good you are at this. I like the plot as it's going now and they think there's trouble before, well there's kids around now, I can picture where this will go if she's pressed.
You know, it's also the amount and quality of the comments here I love too you get to see wonderful supposition and plot guesses from so many people and authors it's just like getting another bonus thing to read.

Cathy

I suspect 60 seconds would be enough.

Cathy has made some interesting threads in the past, of biblical natures. Wonder if she could have carried them off?

Then apply it to people who really deserve it.

Ding Dong, Avon calling. Blam !

Now, if we can catch a hansom cab to 221B Baker Street, we'll get Sherlock and Watson on the case, forget Lastrade.
If only this works. Brilliant ! swapping insults to keep the demon bitch on the line long enough for SB to get the address.
Gwen, it's my experience that most women are better shots then most men, with the same amount of training.
