Chapter 34
Again. Why me?

When Amy and I returned to the resort, we stopped at my aunt and uncle’s house and found my aunt and grandmother there. As we walked in, my grandmother said, “Kai. Ajie. How was your meeting with the Chiefs?”

Amy and I looked at each other. Then Amy looked at my grandmother, put her hands on her hips, and said, ...

Chapter 33
A talk. Breakfast. And a meeting.

At the bonfire tonight Naainish and I had sat on a blanket together. He had chanted, and I had meditated. What I’d felt had confused me to the point where I couldn’t talk to anyone about it. I wanted to speak with Naainish, but couldn't. I wanted to talk to Chief Todachine, and I couldn’t. I wanted to talk to my grandmother, and I couldn’t. And worst of all I wanted to talk to Amy, and I just couldn’t do it right now.

Chapter 32
A hike. A hairdo. A barbecue and bonfire.

Amy and I were going hiking, so it was back to the room to change into the appropriate clothes. Shorts, loose blouses, wool socks, hiking boot, and our new cowboy hats. I had Amy do my hair in a ponytail, and then we walked over to my aunt and uncle’s house, and my uncle loaned us a couple of canteens and hiking staffs.

No! It can't be.

It was Thursday morning. Where has this week gone?

We were in bed, and I was propped up on one elbow, watching Amy sleep. And thinking about how much I love her.

She eventually stirred, looked over at me, smiled, and said, “You’re staring at me again.”

“Do you mind?”, I replied.

“No.”

“Good. Because I’m never going to stop.”

A shopping trip. And Amy to the rescue.

Both Amy and I had been made honorary members of my grandmother’s clan. And I'd also been made a member of the Navajo Nation. We’d also just met the girl, Dee, that I had donated the money to, from when I did the photo shoot for the resort’s brochure. And Dee and her three friends were meeting us at the bonfire.

An apartment and a birthday.

I had been able to be Kai this evening. I did it to show off what Helen had done with my wig. And it had been fun being Kai again. My dad had started an interesting discussion, which at first had me worried as to his acceptance of my feminine spirit, but it showed me how he thinks and that he has accepted it. But for some reason in being Kai, I had felt a little uncomfortable. A little out of place.

When we were home, and as I was making Amy something to eat, she was looking at the contents of the box. She read the letter, and said, “They were going to pay you two-hundred and fifty dollars for doing that photo shoot. You should have paid them.”

“I should have paid them!”, I said. “Why?”

A little more wine. And a delivery.

Today, Monday, Amy started her third week of clinicals, and it was going to be from four to midnight in the emergency room. So this morning I let her sleep, and I worked my way out of bed without waking her. I got ready for work. And she was still sleeping when I left. I had arranged with my uncle to leave work early this week so that I could take Amy to the hospital.

Chapter 25
Everyone meets Kai and mom’s home.

Sunday morning, Amy and I didn’t sleep in, I don’t know why, but we were up early. After breakfast, we unpacked. I was going to hang the two Biil dress in the spare room’s closet. But since I was going to show my father and my in-laws the way I dressed while I was Kai, I only hung the red one there. After we’d finished unpacking, we went shopping for the food for tonight.

We were also going to make a quick stop at the uniform shop. Amy wanted to purchase an inexpensive Sigma Theta Tau pin to wear on her uniform. But they were closed.

When we were back home, we went to work on putting dinner together. Amy took a little time out from cooking to get her things ready to start her clinicals tomorrow. I'm a good cook and didn’t worry too much about being alone in the kitchen. When Amy came back into the kitchen, I went and became Kai.

Chief Todachine. A barbecue. And back home.

Friday, as we were sitting down to breakfast with my mother, aunt, and uncle. My mother asked, “Why are you two so quiet this morning?”

“I guess it’s because it’s our last day here.”, I replied.

“That’s right. What are you going to do today?”

“Amy wants to see some more of Santa Fe. So I figured we’d run down, see grandma for a little while. Then go to Santa Fe for a while. Then go back and say so long to grandma.”

“Kids.”, Aunt Ruth said. “We have a great Southwestern barbecue every Friday evening. And since it’s your last night here, I thought it would be a good way to say goodbye.”

Another photo shoot.

Thursday morning Amy and I were up very early. We knew that the hotel’s restaurant served a continental breakfast starting at five. But we wanted to take showers before breakfast. No, not together. If we did that, we’d never make it out of the room.

Once we were ready, we walked to the restaurant and had breakfast. We had told my aunt, uncle, and mother what we were going to do for breakfast. And just as we were finishing our breakfast, they joined us. We talked while Amy and I finished our meal. Then as we were getting ready to leave Uncle Paul asked, “Are you ready for today?”

“I guess I’m as ready as I will ever be.”, I replied.

A meeting. Why me? Another dress.

We had met with the Medicine Man, Naainish, and it had been interesting. When we were back at my aunt and uncle’s house, my mother and aunt were back from Albuquerque. We sat with them and told them about our meeting with Naainish. When we finished telling our story, my aunt said, “I knew that you would find your meeting with Naainish interesting. He’s a fascinating person. And I knew that he was interested in meeting you.”

“Thank you for setting it up Aunt Ruth.”, I said. “I think that both Amy and I learned a lot and I now understand what being a person with two spirits means. But now I want to get back to our room, take a shower, and start getting back to being a blond Tammy.”

“Ah. Tammy.”, my Uncle Paul said. “Can I ask you something first?”

Kai, the bonfire, and the Medicine Man.

There I was looking like a Navajo girl dressed in her finest clothes and jewelry, and sitting by the bonfire. My hair was no longer blond, it was black. There were maybe thirty or forty people there, all guests of the resort. Everyone was enjoying the fire, and I was feeling the same thing that I've felt every time I’ve been to the bonfire. Something that I can’t explain. But tonight it was stronger.

Chapter 20

New Mexico, and who is this?

After a week of exams, and early on a Saturday morning, and I mean early, mom, Amy, and I were boarding our flight. All three of us kissed daddy so long, and Amy and I told him that we’d see him next Saturday. He told us to kiss grandma for him. The three of us girls were all dressed very nicely, summer dresses, heels, and nylons. Our first stop would be in Dallas to change planes, and that included a one-hour layover. Then it would be off to Albuquerque.

We arrived in Albuquerque in the early afternoon, mid-afternoon our time, and were met by Aunt Ruth. She gave us a very warm welcome. And she didn’t seem surprised to see Tammy. She told us that she’d been with grandma for a while this morning, and she appeared to be doing a little better. But they were still very concerned about her. And that if we'd like we’d stop and see her before going to the resort. Was there any doubt.

Chapter 19

More of the visit, Amy’s recognized, and Oh no!

We were spending the weekend with Amy's parents so that her dad might get to know Tammy better. Friday evening was interesting. Amy’s dad treated me just like a daughter. And on Saturday evening Amy's parents were hosting their small bridge club.

As we usually did on Saturday, Amy and I slept in. Amy’s dad had gone to play golf and we were up just before he came back home. And we ate lunch with her mom and dad. Then her mother put us to work. With their bridge club coming this evening, the house needed to be cleaned. They usually played bridge in the basement rec room, so we spent time cleaning in there. Then we helped give the rest of the house a cleaning, and since it wasn't very dirty, so it didn't take long.

When we'd finished, Amy's mother said, “You girls have been a big help. I would have been at it all day without your help. It's gotten warm, so why don't you go for a swim?”

Chapter 18

It’s tight and a weekend visit.

Just before spring quarter started, Amy and I stopped in to see Mrs. Taylor and have our hair done. As she was doing my hair, she asked me if I'd like to come in the next time as Tammy. And, if I did, we'd see what we could do about putting my hair into a girl's style. I'd asked her if we could do it on a Saturday, she told me that it was their busiest day, but she'd be willing to come in early to work on me. So, I made an appointment with her for three weeks, at nine in the morning on a Saturday.

As we were leaving the beauty shop, Amy took my hand, and said, “Come on lover.”

Chapter 17

Dr. Grunewald and Detective Thomas

My mother set up a meeting for me with a Dr. Grunewald. She was the friend that my mother had told me about. She's a counselor, actually a psychologist, and an instructor at the University. When I first met her, I was expecting something completely different from what I found. She was a very nice lady, maybe my mother's age or a year older.

We sat down and talked about the incident and my feelings. I told Dr. Grunewald about being afraid of being on campus at night, and that I was always looking over my shoulder. Then how I’d finally remembered the details of the incident, except that I couldn’t see the guy’s faces. She asked me some questions and took a lot of notes.

She then talked about possibly trying hypnosis to help me see their faces and to help me relax. She also said that it might take the capture of the guys that did it before I would entirely be at ease.

So, ...

Larry’s project and the hospital again.

Tonight was Friday night. And Larry was coming over to my parent's house to sit down with Amy and Tammy and work on his psychology research paper. We had met with Larry twice since his professor had accepted the proposal of a study of a cross-dresser, me, for his project.

The first two times that we'd met with Larry, it was as Tom and Amy. We'd told him our whole story, from the trip to the museum to the fake wedding. I even filled him in on what I'd found out about the Navajo half-woman half-man people. And he was very interested in that, so I gave him the information to read.

The last time we’d met with him, he’d asked if he could meet with Tammy and Amy the next time. I’d reluctantly agreed, and was still having second thoughts. But I had agreed so it will be Tammy tonight.

Chapter 12

I can’t wait.

Today was the Fourth of July, and as we always had, we were going to the fireworks show that the city puts on. We'd gone out to a late dinner with Maria and Mark and met up with our other friends at our favorite drive-in. As it started to get dark, we headed to the spot where we usually watched the fireworks.

With the convertible, we didn’t even have to get out of the car. So, the four of us sat in the car. I was cuddled up with Amy, and Maria and Mark were cuddled together in the back seat. As we waited for the show to start, I whispered to Amy, “It looks like it’s gotten a little more serious between Maria and Mark.”

“It has.”, Amy whispered back. “Maria thinks he just might be the one.”

As the fireworks started, I pulled Amy closer. After the show, we took Maria and Mark home. Then we headed to Amy’s house. As we usually did, during good weather, we sat in the driveway for a little while before going inside.

As we sat in the car, in an almost a whisper, Amy asked, “Honey. When can we do it?”

“Do it? We already do it.”, I asked.

I sat down hard on the bed, and said, “Now I’m really not going.”

Amy and I walked back to my room, and there was a bag, from the store where my mom works, on my bed. I walked over to it, looked inside, and there was a box inside. I took the box out, set it on my bed, and removed the top.

A blizzard and a date.

Amy and I began a routine of me picking her up at her parent’s house, and going to the university, then alternating between having dinner with her parents or mine, and then studying. On the days we were at her house, I’d just go home. On the days we were at my house, I’d take her home, and then go back to my house. Not a convenient arraignment, but we were with each other.

There were days, when we were at my house, that Tammy was there. I'd stay as Tammy until it was time to take her home, then change back to Tom, because I'd always go in and talk to her mom and dad.

One day in late January, on the way to school, Amy and I heard on the radio that they were forecasting a blizzard, and it was supposed to hit sometime in the afternoon.

Never lie to a friend.

Like I'd said, I’d started walking every day, that I could, after the cast was off, trying to build up strength in my leg before school started. At first, it was short walks, but they became longer and longer. I worked up to the point that I'd walk to the local park and walk the trails. It's a big park and has a number of hiking trails. And on rainy days, when I was at home, I was dressing as a girl.

Then one day as I was leaving home to go for my walk, Amy saw me, and yelled, “Hey Tommy. Wait up.”

I tried to open my eyes, but they wouldn't cooperate. Finally, I was able to get my eyes open, and the bright light hurt them. Everything was blurry. The first thing to come into focus was the ceiling. I don’t have white ceiling tiles in my room! What the heck. This isn’t my room. Where am I?

Tommy - The Trials and Tribulations of a Girl? - Chapter 01

This is the story of Tommy, who, when we first meet him, is a very curious twelve-year-old. He has to know about everything, how it works, why does it feel like this, what happens if I do this, and so on. One day he asks his mother, what’s it like to dress in pretty things? And, as happens, once he starts dressing in pretty things there is no going back. But what’s behind this? Is he a cross-dresser, or is there something more behind it. Why does he want to do it more? Why does the girl next door like it when he dresses in pretty clothes? Why does he feel he is the girl that he’s dressed as? Why do all of his friends and family accept this part of him? Will a trip to New Mexico answer some of these questions, or will he have more questions than answers when he returns home? Will there be another girl, another spirit? Will he or she find himself or herself? Will he like what he finds?

A Petticoat Detective Squad Adventure

Written by Andrea (with a little help from Daphne!)

Forward

Children's adventure stories such as Nancy Drew or the Famous Five all revolve around a similar theme. That theme is usually about the child, or children, confronting adversity and triumphing in the end.

The story that follows is a variation on that theme and viewed from a different perspective. Our little tale concerns a young boy spending a holiday with his older girl cousin and favourite aunt. The children become obsessed with the mystery of the figure of a lonely girl who regularly appears in the garden of a nearby manor house. When our hero's cousin and a small group of school friends are invited to spend a couple of days staying at the manor to work on a school project, she is presented with the perfect opportunity to solve the mystery. To make her plan work, however, she must enlist her cousin's help and get him included in the party. The only problem is that the party must consist of girls only....

This story is written to depict a young boy's first innocent encounters with cross-dressing and his subsequent feelings. If the reader is seeking descriptions of explicit or adult sex then they will be disappointed because this sort of thing is not included here.

Illusion of Being Maternal

It's time for a new Mercynaries illustrated story, The Illusion of Being Maternal. The story of a not-so-bright employee that just wants to help his company out, fashion, unnecessary puns, and sandwiches. I don't understand how the fashion industry works, so clearly it's controlled by a sinister cabal.
